| The
Memphis University School of Nursing offers a undergraduate and graduate
curriculum with a strong liberal arts component. The School is committed to supporting
the research and scholarship mission of the University of Memphis, while
continuing to offer an outstanding instructional program. School
History The
late William A. and Ruth Loewenberg were Memphians who were actively involved
in many philanthropic causes. Mr. Loewenberg served on the Board of Directors
for St. Joseph Hospital for many years. He was instrumental in the development
of St. Francis Hospital which was built upon land donated by the Loewenberg family.
He served St. Francis Hospital for many years as a member of the board of directors. Throughout
his many years of service to St. Francis, he was well known for his support of
nursing. When his children Mr. William I. Loewenberg and his wife Betty, Ms. Joanne
Markel, and Mrs. Frederika Felt and her husband Joel Felt wanted to honor Mr.
and Mrs. Loewenberg, they established a Chair of Excellence in their honor. Mr.
Loewenberg asked that the chair be endowed in Nursing because he believed it would
accomplish the greatest good in this area. Application
for Admission Students
who desire admission to the undergraduate program of the Loewenberg School of
Nursing must: - Be
admitted to The University of Memphis as a degree seeking student.

Have a minimum college cumulative grade point average of 2.7, and a cumulative
of 2.4 in prerequisite sciences. (A prerequisite science course may be repeated
only once to earn a grade of "C" or higher. A maximum of two prerequisite science
courses may be repeated to earn the minimum required grade.).
- Have
completed specified pre-nursing courses with a minimum grade of "C" in all courses:
4Clearance of any high school deficiencies.

Have a minimum score of 600 (250 computer based score) on the TOEFL (for students
whom English is a second language).

Students who are transferring from another nursing program must submit a letter
of good standing from the dean/director of the previous nursing program and a
transcript.

Course
Descriptions Foundations
of Nursing
Introduction to nursing process and concepts basic to practice of professional
nursing; theory focus on development of nursing knowledge necessary for promotion
of health and prevention of illness in individual. Three lecture hours per week.
PREREQUISITE: admission to the Loewenberg School of Nursing. COREQUISITE: NURS
2218, *2219, 2220, 3000, 3101, 3400. Integrative
Skills I
Laboratory experiences focus on development of competency in performing basic
clinical nursing procedures. Three laboratory hours per week. PREREQUISITE: admission
to the Loewenberg School of Nursing. COREQUISITE: NURS 2217, 2219, 2220, 3000,
3101, 3400. Foundations
of Nursing Practicum
Clinical experiences include provision of direct care of adult clients in secondary
care and/or extended care settings. Six clinical laboratory hours per week. PREREQUISITE:
admission to the Loewenberg School of Nursing. COREQUISITE: NURS *2217, 2218,
2220, 3000, 3101, 3400 (S/U). Dosage
Calculation
Introduction to systems of measurement used in medication administration; ability
to determine safe dosages for all types of medications and intravenous fluids.
One lecture hour per week. PREREQUISITE: MATH requirement, CHEM 1010, 1020. Pharmacology
in Nursing
Basic pharmacology of drugs in the major classifications; emphasis on action of
a prototype on organ systems, its mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, toxicology
and clinically important interactions with other drugs. PREREQUISITE: BIOL 2010/2011,
2020/2021, CHEM 1010, 1020, MMCS 1230/1231. Adult
Health Nursing Practicum
Clinical experiences include provision of direct care of adult clients and their
families in secondary and rehabilitative care settings. Six clinical hours per
week. PREREQUISITE: NURS 2217, 2218, 2219, 2220, 3000, 3101, 3400. COREQUISITE:
*NURS 3117, 3118 (S/U).
